Delhi Businessman Dies After Attack by Delivery Agents

Tragic Death of Delhi Businessman Following Alleged Assault by Food Delivery Agents

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the capital, a 36-year-old businessman named Shivam Gupta passed away on Tuesday, nearly three weeks after being allegedly attacked by food delivery agents in the bustling central Delhi area of Connaught Place. The victim, who was the only child of his parents, suffered severe injuries during the altercation, which ultimately proved fatal.

Details of the Violent Confrontation

According to police reports cited by news agency PTI, the tragic event unfolded on the night of January 2 near E Block in Connaught Place. The confrontation reportedly began when Shivam Gupta asked a delivery agent for water, sparking a verbal dispute that quickly escalated into physical violence. During the altercation, the delivery agent allegedly punched and kicked Gupta before striking him multiple times on the head with a helmet.

Police investigations revealed that two additional delivery agents joined in the attack, intensifying the assault on the businessman. The severity of the incident became apparent when a PCR call was made around 1:30 am on January 3, reporting an unconscious man lying on the road with visible bleeding.

Medical Treatment and Hospitalization

Shivam Gupta was immediately rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, where medical professionals discovered multiple haematomas (localized collections of blood outside blood vessels) on his body. His condition was so critical that doctors declared him unfit to provide any statement about the incident at that time.

He was subsequently transferred to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for specialized care and underwent surgery on January 5. His father, Anil Kant Gupta, who owns shops in Paharganj, shared that his son initially showed promising signs of recovery following the surgical intervention. However, despite these hopeful indicators, Shivam Gupta's condition deteriorated, and he ultimately passed away on January 19.

Father's Account and CCTV Evidence

Anil Kant Gupta provided disturbing details about the incident, stating that he personally reviewed CCTV footage alongside police officials. The footage reportedly showed his son lying unconscious on the ground while a friend stood nearby without intervening or immediately informing the family.

"I, along with the police, checked many CCTV footage of the incident," Gupta recounted. "I was told by the police that my son asked for water from the delivery agents when a verbal spat ensued with one of the agents. He, in a fit of rage, repeatedly struck a helmet on my son's head. He fell unconscious on the ground and his friend, who went with him, was standing close to him. I have no idea why he did not inform us about the entire matter."

Police Investigation and Legal Action

Law enforcement authorities have taken significant steps in response to this tragic incident. Police officials conducted a thorough inspection of the crime scene and collected blood-stained materials for forensic examination to gather crucial evidence. The review of CCTV footage has been instrumental in piecing together the sequence of events.

An FIR (First Information Report) has been registered under Section 110 (culpable homicide) and Section 3(5) (common intention) of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. So far, two individuals have been apprehended in connection with the case, and police are continuing their investigation to identify all parties involved in the alleged assault.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to ensure justice is served in this heartbreaking case that has claimed the life of a young businessman and left a family devastated.
