Dehradun Police Pursue Prime Suspect in Fatal Student Attack
More than a month has passed since the tragic death of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura. Police in Dehradun district are still searching for the main suspect in this case. The young man died after a violent confrontation in Dehradun's Selaqui area on December 9.
Suspect Remains at Large Despite Police Efforts
Authorities have identified Yagya Awasthi as the prime suspect in this fatal stabbing. Police believe Awasthi attacked Chakma from behind during the evening altercation. The assault proved fatal for the young student.
Investigators report that Awasthi fled immediately after the incident. He has remained absconding ever since. Police have already arrested five other individuals connected to the case. However, capturing Awasthi has presented significant challenges.
The police department has announced a reward of one lakh rupees for information leading to his arrest. This substantial reward demonstrates their serious commitment to solving this case.
Cross-Border Manhunt Underway
Officers from the special investigation team handling the case suspect Awasthi is hiding in Nepal. Specifically, they believe he has taken refuge in Sudurpashchim province. This region shares a border with Uttarakhand.
An officer involved in the investigation explained the difficulties. "Tracking Awasthi has been particularly challenging," the officer stated anonymously. "He has not contacted his family since the attack. His phone has remained completely switched off. We know his parents previously lived in Haridwar's Har-Ki-Pauri area. They left Uttarakhand shortly after the incident."
The officer confirmed ongoing coordination with Nepali authorities. "We have solid information indicating he is still in Nepal. Our teams are working closely with counterparts across the border to locate and arrest him."
Official Confirmation of International Cooperation
Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh verified these cross-border efforts. He confirmed that the special investigation team has formally requested assistance from Nepali agencies.
"We have followed proper protocol for cross-border cases," SSP Singh explained. "Our requests have been channeled through the Ministry of External Affairs. We have received necessary cooperation from Nepali authorities. All efforts continue toward achieving his arrest."
The police maintain their focus on bringing the suspect to justice. They emphasize their determination to resolve this case completely.
