The post-mortem findings in the killing of 24-year-old Tripura student Anjel Chakma in Dehradun have laid bare the horrific brutality of the assault. The MBA student, who succumbed to his injuries on December 26, 2025, died primarily due to severe head injuries, possibly inflicted by a metal bracelet or kada, as per the autopsy report accessed on Friday.
Gruesome Details from the Autopsy Report
The medical examination documented a series of vicious wounds on Anjel Chakma's body. The report noted 13 stitches on the right side of his neck, measuring 12.5 cm in length. Additionally, there were three stitches on the right lower back (3 cm) and one stitch (1 cm) on the right shoulder. Crucially, the report confirmed ante-mortem head injuries as the cause of death.
Beyond the external wounds, the violence caused critical internal damage. Anjel sustained injuries to his vertebrae and spinal cord, with fractures identified at the C2, C3, and C5 levels of his neck vertebrae. The report mentioned that implants were placed at the C2 and C3 levels, involving a medical device to address the fractures and instability.
The Fatal Attack and Ongoing Investigation
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of December 9, 2025, in the Selaqui area of Dehradun. Anjel was out buying groceries with his younger brother, 21-year-old Michael Chakma, when they were allegedly attacked by six youths. The group included two juveniles.
Inspector Bhaskar Sah, who is leading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, provided chilling details. "The autopsy report corroborates a probe finding that Anjel was attacked with a metal bracelet (kada) by one of the accused," Sah stated. He added that after the kada blow, another accused, who is currently absconding, stabbed Anjel on the lower back with a knife.
Medical Expert Opinion and Family's Demand for Justice
Senior neurosurgeon Dr. Mahesh Kuriyal, analyzing the report's details, emphasized that the head trauma was the definitive cause of death. "With the details of other injuries mentioned in the report, head injuries seem to be the only cause of death as a patient hardly dies of spinal cord injuries," Dr. Kuriyal explained. He concluded that the young man likely suffered fatal complications arising from the head injuries.
Anjel Chakma battled for his life for over two weeks before passing away at a private hospital on the morning of December 26. His brother Michael is the official complainant in the case.
Speaking to the media from Tripura, Anjel's uncle, Momen Chakma, voiced the family's anguish and demand for accountability. He called for "equal and strict punishment for all six accused," leaving no room for leniency. The case continues to be investigated by the SIT as they work to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
