Dalit Woman Abducted Days Before Wedding in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi District
In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit woman was allegedly abducted just days before her scheduled wedding in Bhadohi district, prompting swift police action. Authorities have registered a case against six individuals, highlighting concerns over caste-based violence and safety in the region.
Police Register FIR Based on Father's Complaint
Superintendent of Police Abhinav Tyagi confirmed that the case was officially registered on Sunday evening following a written complaint filed by the woman's father. The accused, all residents of Fattupur village under the Suriyawan police station jurisdiction, have been identified as Teju Bind, his father Sheshdhar, his mother Mewati Bind, Shivam Bind, Sahab Lal, and Ramnath Bind.
The FIR includes serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically sections 87 for kidnapping or abducting a woman to compel marriage, 351(3) for criminal intimidation, and 352 for intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace. Additionally, provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been invoked, underscoring the caste dimension of the alleged crime.
Details of the Abduction and Investigation
According to police reports, the woman was abducted on April 15 when her family members were not at home. This was not the first such incident; officials revealed that she had previously been abducted on the night of April 6. SP Tyagi noted that her wedding was set for April 20, with preparations actively underway at the time.
On the intervening night of April 6 and 7, Teju Bind allegedly abducted her with assistance from an accomplice. The family, after an extensive search, received information that she was in Prayagraj. They located her in a room there on April 12 and brought her back home. However, due to the proximity of the wedding, no formal complaint or legal action was taken initially, police stated.
Ongoing Probe and Recovery Efforts
Circle Officer Ashok Mishra has been assigned to lead the investigation into this case, with a primary focus on ensuring the woman's safe recovery. The police are actively pursuing leads and working to apprehend the accused, emphasizing the urgency given the sensitive nature of the incident and its timing before the wedding.
This case has drawn attention to issues of caste-based atrocities and women's safety in Uttar Pradesh, sparking discussions on the effectiveness of legal protections for marginalized communities. Authorities urge the public to report any related information to aid in the investigation.
