CRPF Launches Final Offensive Against Maoists in Odisha Districts
In a decisive move to meet the March 31 deadline, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has identified the last pockets of Maoist influence in Odisha, specifically targeting Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Rayagada districts. These areas are known to harbor a handful of remaining Maoist operatives, marking the final phase of the state's extensive anti-insurgency campaign.
Urgency and Coordination in Security Operations
Amitendra Nath Sinha, the inspector-general for the Odisha sector, highlighted that the momentum generated under Union Home Minister Amit Shah's directive has injected a renewed sense of urgency among security forces. He expressed strong confidence that the March 31 deadline will be achieved, which would represent a major milestone in Odisha's long-standing battle against Maoism.
Sinha emphasized that the CRPF, as the lead paramilitary force in these operations, is working in close collaboration with the Odisha police. This coordination aims to consolidate the gains made over the past year and a half and prevent any reversal of progress. "We are committed to ensuring that our efforts lead to lasting peace," he stated.
Strategic Roadmap and Recent Successes
Sources revealed that the CRPF has developed a detailed, area-specific roadmap to address security gaps and has recalibrated its deployment strategy. This approach is designed to completely eradicate residual Maoist influence. The strategy follows a series of successful operations in recent months that have:
- Dismantled key Maoist networks
- Neutralized prominent operatives
- Weakened the core structure of the insurgency
While overall force levels may be rationalized, security presence will be maintained in sensitive pockets to deter any potential resurgence of Maoist activities.
Expanded Role in Multi-State Offensive
Sinha pointed out that the CRPF has played a pivotal role in a multi-state offensive to reclaim Maoist strongholds. The force maintains a predominant presence not only in Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Rayagada but also in Nuapada, Rourkela, and Nabarangpur districts. This widespread deployment underscores the comprehensive nature of the security efforts across Odisha.
Shift Towards Development-Centric Strategies
The recalibration of security operations is aligned with a broader shift towards development-centric strategies in Maoist-affected areas. Sinha explained that CRPF personnel are now assisting government agencies in:
- Executing development projects
- Conducting surveys in remote villages
- Identifying infrastructure deficits to prepare structured plans for welfare initiatives
He emphasized that the Ministry of Home Affairs has directed forces to transition from crisis management to focusing on welfare and development, highlighting the importance of public outreach. "Beyond operations, our goal is to materialize the government's safety and development agenda," Sinha added, signaling a holistic approach to addressing the root causes of insurgency.
