In a dramatic late-night operation, a coordinated effort between a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and the Karanda police led to the arrest of a wanted criminal in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district. The incident, which culminated in a brief exchange of fire, occurred on Sunday night.
The Encounter and Arrest
The operation was set into motion during routine night patrolling. Personnel from the Karanda police station, stationed near Mainpur village, received a crucial alert from the SWAT team. The alert indicated that a criminal was moving towards Mainpur via the Mainpur Taal route.
Acting swiftly, the police cordoned off the area and began checking vehicles. During this search, officers spotted a suspicious individual near the Taal dam. Upon realizing he was surrounded by police, the man opened fire in a desperate attempt to escape. The police team retaliated in self-defense, resulting in the suspect sustaining a bullet injury in his leg. He was subsequently overpowered and taken into custody.
Identity and Confession
The injured criminal was identified as Akash Kumar Gupta, a resident of the Brahminpura area. Before he was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment, police recovered a pistol and several cartridges from his possession.
During interrogation, Gupta confessed to his involvement in a sensational incident that had previously shaken the local community. He admitted to creating a disturbance with some local goons by opening indiscriminate fire in the Brahminpura area on October 10. This confession directly linked him to the earlier case of public violence.
Police Statement and Recovery
Ghazipur City Officer (CO) Shekhar Sengar provided details of the successful joint operation. He emphasized that the arrest was a result of precise intelligence and seamless coordination between the specialized SWAT unit and the local police force.
The recovery of the firearm and ammunition from Gupta's possession provided concrete evidence of his criminal activities. The police are now investigating his broader network and possible involvement in other crimes in the Varanasi and Ghazipur regions.
This operation highlights the continued efforts of Uttar Pradesh police to curb gang-related violence and maintain public order through proactive patrolling and targeted actions against known criminals.
