Cricketer arrested for murder of woman in Chittoor

Police in Chittoor district have made a significant arrest in a chilling murder case, apprehending a 26-year-old state-level cricketer for the alleged killing of a differently-abled woman he had promised to marry. The accused, identified as K Ganesh, was taken into custody by the Chittoor II Town police for the murder of 31-year-old C Kavitha, a resident of Chittoor town.

The Disappearance and Investigation

The case came to light when Kavitha went missing on December 31, 2025, after leaving her home. After her family's repeated attempts to locate her failed, a formal complaint was lodged with the police on January 2, 2026. The report was filed through Murali, the district president of a differently-abled persons' association. A crucial piece of evidence emerged early on: Kavitha had previously sent a voice message to acquaintances stating that if anything happened to her, Ganesh should be held responsible.

Based on a complaint from her brother, Kiran, a missing person case was registered and special investigation teams were formed. The police meticulously traced Kavitha's last known movements using CCTV footage, which captured her boarding an auto-rickshaw near Raghava Theatre. The auto driver was questioned, leading to intensive searches in and around Muthukuru and nearby villages with help from local residents and the village sarpanch.

Discovery of the Body and Arrest

The breakthrough came on January 7, 2026, when, during technical surveillance and ground searches, police discovered a woman's body under the Bahuda river bridge near Gangadhara Nellore. The body was later confirmed to be that of Kavitha. Following this grim discovery, the case was officially altered to murder, and a post-mortem examination was conducted at a government hospital.

The investigation swiftly pointed to Ganesh. He was detained near the Kattamanchi Y-Junction. During questioning, he reportedly confessed to the crime. According to police, Ganesh told investigators that Kavitha was insisting on marriage. He, however, wanted to end the relationship after securing a job as an assistant manager with the State Bank of India. He allegedly assaulted and killed her on the night of December 31 and dumped her body under the bridge. In an attempt to destroy evidence, he later disposed of her mobile phone.

Profile of the Accused

The accused, K Ganesh, is not an ordinary individual. Police revealed that he is a state-level cricketer who had previously played in the Rajasthan Rajwada Cricket League. Adding a poignant layer to the case, Ganesh had also represented India in an international cricket match against Nepal, but for differently-abled players. This detail underscores the tragic nature of the crime, where the victim and accused were part of a similar community.

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the local community in Tirupati and Chittoor, highlighting serious concerns about violence and betrayal. The police have successfully closed the case with the accused's confession and corroborative evidence, bringing a measure of justice for Kavitha's grieving family.
