Congress MP's Nephew Allegedly Shoots Wife and Self in Ahmedabad Apartment
In a shocking turn of events, a young couple's life ended tragically in their Ahmedabad apartment, with police investigating an alleged murder-suicide involving a licensed firearm. The incident has sent ripples through the political and social circles of Gujarat.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The Ahmedabad Police reported that the incident occurred late on Wednesday night, between 11:30 PM and midnight, at the couple's residence on the fifth floor of NRI Tower on Judges Bungalow Road. Yashrajsinh Durgeshsinh Gohil, 30, who had recently joined the Gujarat Maritime Board as an officer, is alleged to have shot his wife, Rajeshwari, 30, before turning the gun on himself.
Sources indicate that the couple had just returned from a dinner at a relative's home and were preparing for an upcoming holiday abroad when the tragedy unfolded. An ambulance was called to the scene after Rajeshwari was shot, but by the time medical personnel arrived, she was found without a pulse.
Emergency Response and Police Investigation
According to police statements, when an Emergency Medical Technician reached the apartment, Rajeshwari was lying on the floor, and no pulse could be detected. The EMT stepped out to consult with a physician, during which a gunshot was heard. Upon re-entering, Yashrajsinh was found to have allegedly shot himself.
Assistant Commissioner of Police J D Brahmbhatt provided further insights, noting that the police arrived around midnight and found both bodies with gunshot wounds. The revolver, a licensed weapon, has been sent for forensic analysis to determine the exact sequence of events.
An Accidental Death report has been initially filed at the Vastrapur police station, with investigations pending forensic, ballistics, and post-mortem reports. The bodies were taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for examination.
Family and Political Reactions
Yashrajsinh was identified as the nephew of Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil, adding a political dimension to the personal tragedy. Manish Doshi, spokesperson for the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, described the incident as "extremely unfortunate and shocking" for the family and community.
Doshi elaborated that Yashrajsinh had recently cleared the GMB exam and was also preparing for UPSC exams. He mentioned that the young man had a habit of brandishing his revolver, suggesting the shooting might have been accidental. "He had a habit of brandishing his revolver and it seems that the bullet accidentally went off and hit his wife," Doshi stated, adding that Yashrajsinh called an ambulance immediately but, in a state of shock, later shot himself.
The couple was cremated in their native village of Limda in Bhavnagar, with MP Shaktisinh Gohil present, who is reportedly in a state of shock.
Background and Community Impact
Yashrajsinh and Rajeshwari had been married for only about two months, making the incident all the more heartbreaking for their families and friends. Doshi recalled Yashrajsinh as an "enthusiastic young man" with a passion for fast cars, a trait that often drew rebukes from his uncle.
This tragedy highlights concerns over firearm safety and mental health, as the community grapples with the loss of two young lives. The police continue to investigate, urging the public to await official findings before drawing conclusions.
