Jamshedpur: West Singhbhum civil surgeon Dr. Jujhar Majhi has constituted a three-member committee to investigate a case of alleged negligence in blood transfusion at Chaibasa Sadar Hospital. The incident involves Surendra Boypai, a 48-year-old resident of Khutpani block, who was admitted to the hospital with severe anaemia on June 11.
Details of the Incident
During his treatment, doctors advised that Boypai required six units of blood. A test was conducted at the hospital's blood bank, and he was provided one unit of AB+ blood group, which was subsequently transfused. However, on June 16, when Boypai underwent another blood group test, it was discovered that his actual blood group was O+.
A source stated, “The second unit of AB+ blood was not administered, and the matter was immediately reported to the hospital administration.”
Committee Formation and Investigation
Dr. Majhi announced that a three-member medical team was set up on Thursday to conduct the investigation. The team includes the deputy superintendent of the hospital, a physician, and a pathologist.
“Only after the inquiry report is submitted will it be clear where the error occurred and who is responsible. The investigation will determine how an incorrect blood group was allegedly made available to the patient and at what level the lapse occurred,” Majhi said.
Patient's Condition and Concerns
“Normally, a patient dies within 48 hours of wrong blood transfusion. In this case, however, the patient is still alive,” Majhi noted. He also mentioned that the possibility of a conspiracy to discredit the hospital cannot be ruled out, and even hospital staff could be involved. The probe report is expected in a day or two.
Past Incidents and Ongoing Issues
This incident has once again raised questions about the functioning of the blood bank at the hospital. In October last year, five thalassemia children contracted HIV due to botched blood transfusions. The Jharkhand High Court took cognizance of that incident, leading to a series of measures undertaken by the state government.
