19-Year-Old College Student Brutally Murdered in Mandi, Accused Arrested
A shocking and brutal murder has rocked the Gopalpur area of Sarkaghat subdivision in Mandi district, where a 19-year-old college student was hacked to death in broad daylight on Monday. The incident, allegedly perpetrated by a man from her own village, has sparked widespread outrage among local residents, raising serious concerns about safety and law enforcement in the region.
Details of the Tragic Attack
The victim, identified as Sia Guleria, was on her way to her college in Sarkaghat around 9 a.m. when she was viciously attacked. According to police reports, she was struck repeatedly on the head, neck, and hands with a sharp-edged weapon, leading to her immediate death at the scene. The assailant fled the area and sought refuge in a nearby forest, evading initial capture.
Local residents quickly alerted the authorities, prompting a swift response from police teams led by the Station House Officer (SHO) and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). Mandi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar also arrived at the crime scene with a forensic team to gather evidence. As news of the murder spread, angry villagers joined forces with the police in an intensive search for the accused.
Capture and Arrest of the Accused
In a dramatic turn of events, villagers from the Gopalpur panchayat tracked down the accused, identified as 36-year-old Vikas from the same village. He was found hiding near a wheat field in a forested area. Before being handed over to the police, Vikas was reportedly thrashed by the enraged crowd, reflecting the community's fury over the heinous crime.
Mandi SP Vinod Kumar confirmed that the accused has been arrested and a murder case has been registered at the Sarkaghat police station. "The police teams have collected evidence from the crime scene, and the accused is being questioned. The body has been sent to the Medical College and Hospital in Nerchowk for a postmortem examination. We will soon recover the weapon used in the crime and produce the accused before a local court in the coming days," he stated.
Investigation and Motive
The motive behind the murder remains unclear at this stage, according to SP Vinod Kumar. However, preliminary investigations by police sources suggest that the accused may have killed Sia Guleria after she rejected his advances. Many locals have also alleged that Vikas is a drug addict, adding another layer of complexity to the case.

Condemning the incident in strong terms, Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta described the killing as "heinous, inhuman, and deeply disturbing." He emphasized that such acts have no place in a civilized society and spoke with officiating Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari to seek a detailed report. The governor directed the police to take swift and stringent action to ensure justice is delivered at the earliest.
Expressing his condolences to the bereaved family, Governor Gupta stressed the need for stronger measures to ensure safety, particularly for women in the state. In a separate statement, Himachal Pradesh State Commission for Women Chairperson Vidya Negi called for a speedy probe and strict action against the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, Sarkaghat BJP MLA Dalip Thakur blamed the state government for rising drug abuse, linking it to the incident. "There is an atmosphere of fear in the area as this incident is unprecedented.
