Coimbatore Youth Murders Teen Girl and Grandmother After Marriage Proposal Rejected
In a shocking incident near Pollachi in Coimbatore district, a 24-year-old youth allegedly murdered a 16-year-old girl and her 65-year-old grandmother on Monday night after the girl refused his proposal to marry him before she attained the legal age of marriage. The brutal attack has sent shockwaves through the local community and prompted a swift police response.
Victims and Injuries Identified
The deceased have been identified as B Kowsika, a resident of Kondekavundampalayam in Aavalpatti village, and her grandmother M Mayilathal, aged 65. Kowsika's 17-year-old sister, Haritha, sustained injuries on her hand and face during the violent assault by the accused. She was immediately admitted to Pollachi Government Headquarters Hospital for medical treatment, where she is currently recovering from her wounds.
Background of the Relationship and Proposal
According to police reports, the accused, Abhishek from Negamam, had been in a relationship with Kowsika for the past three years. In a formal approach, Abhishek, accompanied by his parents, had visited the girl's family to propose marriage. However, the family firmly stated that any marriage proposal could only be considered after Kowsika reached the legal age for marriage, which is 18 years in India. This decision was made in adherence to the law and to ensure the girl's well-being.
Escalation to Violence
Police investigations reveal that Abhishek continued to harass Kowsika persistently, pressuring her to agree to the marriage despite her family's stance. On Monday evening, the situation escalated dramatically when Abhishek went to the girl's house and engaged in a heated altercation, insisting once again that she marry him. When Kowsika refused his demands, he allegedly took a knife and stabbed her multiple times. In a tragic turn of events, when Mayilathal attempted to intervene and protect her granddaughter, she was also stabbed by the assailant. Haritha, who tried to stop the attack, was similarly assaulted and sustained injuries before Abhishek fled the scene. Kowsika and Mayilathal succumbed to their injuries and died on the spot, marking a devastating loss for the family.
