Coimbatore Youth Arrested for Allegedly Abetting College Student's Suicide

In a distressing incident from Coimbatore, a young man has been taken into custody by the Peelamedu police on charges of abetting the suicide of a female college student. The arrest was made on Friday, shedding light on a tragic case that has shocked the local community.

Details of the Arrested Individual

The police have identified the arrested person as S Praveen, a 23-year-old native of Erode. Praveen, who worked as a food delivery boy, was residing in Coimbatore city at the time of the incident. Authorities have confirmed his arrest in connection with the suicide of R Harini, a 20-year-old student from Namakkal.

Background of the Victim

Harini was a third-year graduate student enrolled in a private college located near Peelamedu. She was staying in a private hostel close to Hope College, where she pursued her studies. The tragic events unfolded from what began as an innocent interaction.

How the Scam Unfolded

According to police reports, Praveen first met Harini when he delivered food to her at the hostel. He subsequently befriended her through repeated phone calls, gradually winning her trust over time. Exploiting this trust, Praveen allegedly convinced Harini to hand over her gold chain, which weighed approximately 1.5 sovereigns.

He claimed he needed to pledge the chain to address an urgent emergency, promising to return it within two months. However, Praveen failed to keep his word, leaving Harini in a state of distress.

The Tragic Outcome

Harini made numerous attempts to contact Praveen by phone, but all her efforts proved futile. Fearing severe repercussions from her family over the lost gold chain, she tragically took her own life by hanging herself in her hostel room on February 11.

Police Investigation and Findings

Following the incident, the police registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation. During their examination of Harini's mobile phone, officers discovered extensive communications between her and Praveen. This evidence played a crucial role in the investigation.

Further inquiries revealed that Praveen had allegedly cheated several other women using similar deceptive tactics. He reportedly used the money obtained from these scams to purchase alcohol, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior.

Legal Actions Taken

The Peelamedu police have arrested Praveen and lodged him in the Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial custody. The case underscores the serious consequences of such fraudulent activities and the importance of vigilance in personal interactions.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young students away from home and the devastating impact of exploitation. The police continue to investigate the matter to ensure justice is served.
