Coimbatore Police Intensify Anti-Drug Operations with Multiple Arrests
In a significant crackdown on illicit drug activities, the Coimbatore city police conducted coordinated raids on Thursday, resulting in the arrest of four individuals across three separate incidents. The operations targeted the illegal possession and peddling of ganja and painkiller tablets, underscoring law enforcement's commitment to curbing substance abuse in the region.
First Raid: Bazaar Police Nab Youth Near Ukkadam
Acting on specific intelligence, the Bazaar police executed a search operation at Lorry Pettai near Ukkadam. During the raid, officers encountered a youth standing near a moped and conducted a thorough search. The individual was identified as H Mohammed Ashik, a 26-year-old resident of Kuniyamuthur. Police discovered ganja and painkiller tablets in his possession, leading to his immediate arrest.
Investigations revealed that Ashik had procured these substances with the intent to sell them to young people, including college students, across Coimbatore. The seizure from this operation was substantial, including two kilograms of ganja, 260 painkiller pills, two syringes, and the moped used in the peddling activities.
Second Incident: RS Puram Police Seize Ganja from Peddler
In a parallel operation on Thursday morning, the RS Puram police conducted a search on N Dinesh, a 24-year-old from Seeranaicken Palayam. During the inspection, officers found 2.3 kilograms of ganja in his possession. Dinesh reportedly confessed to his involvement in peddling ganja within the city, highlighting the ongoing challenges in combating drug distribution networks.
Third Case: Mother-Son Duo Apprehended in Kavundampalayam
The Kavundampalayam police made another breakthrough by arresting P Rangammal, 47, and her son Arun Kumar, 29, both residents of Kavundampalayam. In this incident, police seized 476 grams of ganja from the duo. Additionally, a scooter and a mobile phone, allegedly used in their ganja peddling operations, were confiscated as evidence.
This arrest underscores the diverse demographics involved in drug-related crimes, with authorities noting the use of everyday items like vehicles and communication devices to facilitate illegal activities.
Legal Proceedings and Custody
Following the arrests, all four individuals were remanded to judicial custody. The police have emphasized that these operations are part of a broader strategy to dismantle drug peddling networks and protect the youth from substance abuse. The total seizure from the three incidents amounts to over 4.7 kilograms of ganja, along with painkiller tablets and other paraphernalia, marking a significant blow to local drug trafficking efforts.
Authorities continue to urge public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities, as they ramp up surveillance and enforcement measures to maintain law and order in Coimbatore.
