Coimbatore Police Launch Major Crackdown on Public Drinking
Coimbatore city police have taken strong action against public alcohol consumption. They arrested more than fifty people during a special weekend drive.
Weekend Arrests Target Open Places
Police officers made thirty-six arrests on Saturday. They followed this with fifteen more arrests on Sunday. The operation focused on multiple locations across the city.
City Police Commissioner N Kannan ordered the special drive. Personnel from various police stations participated actively. They targeted individuals consuming liquor in public spaces.
Legal Action Under Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act
All arrested individuals faced charges under Section 4(A) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act. This section specifically addresses prohibition violations. Police later released the accused on bail after processing.
Sunday saw several police stations registering cases. Thudiyalur and Peelamedu stations each registered three cases. Saravanampatti, Podanur and Singanallur stations registered two cases each.
Police Focus on Multiple Public Nuisances
A senior police officer explained their broader concerns. "We need to control several public nuisance activities," he stated. The list includes drinking alcohol in open places.
It also covers selling banned tobacco products. Public smoking forms another target area. Police plan continued action against these behaviors.
"Special drives address this issue directly," the officer emphasized. "We take legal action against anyone consuming alcohol publicly." The police remain committed to maintaining public order.
