Police Inspector Accused of Orchestrating Fake FIR to Steal Gold

In a shocking case of police corruption, the Coimbatore City Crime Branch (CCB) has registered a formal case against a serving police inspector and seven other officers for allegedly fabricating a false FIR and extorting more than one kilogram of gold from a local businessman.

The accused, identified as Selvaraj, an inspector with Selvapuram police station, stands charged with criminal conspiracy, extortion, and abuse of official position following a detailed investigation prompted by a Madras High Court directive.

The Day of the Police Raid: September 17, 2024

According to official CCB reports, the incident unfolded on September 17, 2024, when Inspector Selvaraj led a team of seven policemen to the residence of B Somasundaram, a 58-year-old construction businessman living in Sivananda Colony.

The police officers informed Somasundaram that a complaint had been filed against him by one Muthukumar, a jewellery business owner, accusing the businessman of cheating him out of 1.25 kg of gold valued at approximately Rs 1.25 crore.

Somasundaram repeatedly stated that he had no acquaintance with Muthukumar and was completely unaware of any such transaction or complaint. Despite his protests, the police team forcibly took him to Selvapuram police station for what they described as routine interrogation.

The Interrogation and Gold Extortion

During the interrogation at the police station, Inspector Selvaraj allegedly threatened Somasundaram with immediate arrest and judicial custody unless he returned the supposedly stolen gold jewellery.

Fearing legal repercussions and potential imprisonment, the terrified businessman arranged for more than one kilogram of gold through his assistant and handed it over to the police inspector.

Only after receiving the valuable consignment did the police release Somasundaram and allow him to return home, having successfully executed their extortion scheme.

Legal Recourse and Court Intervention

Realizing he had been victimized by the very authorities meant to protect him, Somasundaram filed a formal petition with the Madras High Court, detailing the entire incident and providing evidence of the police misconduct.

The court took serious note of the allegations and directed the Coimbatore City Crime Branch to take necessary legal action against the accused officers. Following the judicial order, the CCB police registered a formal case against Inspector Selvaraj and his alleged accomplice Muthukumar.

Investigations are currently underway to determine the full extent of the conspiracy and identify all individuals involved in planning and executing the fake FIR and subsequent gold theft.

This case has raised serious questions about police accountability and the vulnerability of citizens to exploitation by corrupt officials misusing their authority.
