In a significant crackdown on narcotics supply, the Podanur police in Coimbatore have apprehended three individuals accused of distributing drugs, including cannabis and painkillers, to young people in the city.
Patrol Leads to Major Drug Seizure
The arrests unfolded on Thursday morning when police personnel were conducting a routine patrol near the Vellalore housing unit. Officers noticed three men behaving suspiciously behind some buildings and decided to investigate.
Upon checking a bag in their possession, the police made a substantial discovery. The bag contained five kilograms of cannabis (ganja), 200 painkiller tablets, eight syringes, and 22 needles.
Identities of the Accused Revealed
The police have identified the arrested men. They are A Sharuk Khan (28) from Mailkal in Podanur, S Yasar Moosabath (30) from Sriram Nagar near Podanur, and J Lathif (29) from Kuniyamuthur.
During interrogation, the trio confessed to their involvement in peddling these substances to the youth in and around the area, confirming the police's suspicions about their activities.
Contraband Seized and Legal Action Initiated
Following the arrests, the police seized all the confiscated narcotics and paraphernalia. Additionally, they took possession of three mobile phones and a two-wheeler believed to have been used in the illicit trade.
A formal case has been registered against the three accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The court has subsequently remanded them to judicial custody.
This operation highlights the continued vigilance of the Coimbatore police against drug networks targeting vulnerable youth and serves as a stern warning to those involved in such illegal activities.
