S Padma, a 45-year-old resident of Triplicane, made the unexpected find near the Mupathu Amman Koil temple in T Nagar. She had just finished her sanitation duties and was on her way to return her broom and gloves to her superiors when she noticed what seemed to be an abandoned bag.
"It seemed to me that the bag was abandoned. I opened it and found the gold jewellery, and immediately informed my bosses," Padma told TOI. Without a second thought about the immense value she was holding, her first instinct was to report it.
The Straight Path to the Police Station
Padma promptly handed over the precious bag to the officers at the Pondy Bazaar police station. Her clear and honest account allowed the police to act swiftly. They were able to trace the rightful owner by matching the find with a complaint that had been filed earlier about the lost jewellery.
Reflecting on her decision, Padma said, "I thought some family would endure tremendous hardship if I did not take steps to take the jewellery to the police. I am happy that the jewellery is back with its rightful owners." Her primary concern was the potential distress of the family that had lost their valuables.
