Chennai Police Nab Suspect in Heartless Fraud Case Targeting Elderly Man
In a distressing incident in Chennai, police have apprehended a 28-year-old individual for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from a wheelchair-bound elderly man and subsequently cheating his son out of 3,500 rupees through a fabricated accident call. The events unfolded near the Periamet area, highlighting a callous scheme that preyed on vulnerability during the holy month of Ramzan.
Details of the Deceptive Crime
The victim, identified as Kadhar Basha, a 65-year-old resident from Ranipet district, had traveled to Chennai to spend time at a mosque in Periamet. On a Saturday afternoon, while Kadhar Basha was near the mosque, a man approached him under the pretext of needing to make an urgent call due to a dead phone battery. After borrowing the mobile device, the suspect engaged the elderly victim in conversation, cunningly extracting information about his family members and their names.
Seizing a moment of distraction, the accused fled the scene with the stolen phone. Later, he contacted Kadhar Basha's son, falsely claiming that his father had been involved in a road accident and required immediate funds for hospital expenses. Trusting the fabricated story, the son transferred 3,500 rupees to the accused via a UPI transaction, falling victim to the elaborate ruse.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Upon realizing the deception after speaking with his son, Kadhar Basha promptly filed a formal complaint at the Periamet police station. Law enforcement officials swiftly launched an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify the perpetrator. Their efforts led to the arrest of the suspect, Sameer Basha, aged 28 and hailing from Avadi, on the same Saturday.
During the arrest, police successfully recovered the stolen mobile phone and 1,900 rupees in cash from the accused. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting in combating such fraudulent activities, especially those targeting elderly individuals who may be more susceptible to manipulation.
