In a disturbing incident from Chennai, a 27-year-old man was taken into custody by the police on Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. The accused, identified as a sound engineer, reportedly used the social media platform Instagram to befriend the minor before luring her to his residence in the Virugambakkam area.
Neighbour's Vigilance Leads to Rescue
The crime came to light primarily due to the alertness of a neighbour residing in the same apartment building. On December 4, the neighbour observed the young girl entering the suspect's flat. This action raised immediate suspicion. The concerned individual knocked on the apartment door and waited for approximately ten minutes, but received no response as the door remained firmly shut.
Acting swiftly, the neighbour first informed the girl's mother about the suspicious activity. Subsequently, the neighbour managed to gain access to the sound engineer's apartment. Inside, the minor was found hiding in a bathroom. The police were informed immediately, leading to a rapid response from the Virugambakkam police station.
Police Action and Legal Charges
A police team arrived at the scene, rescued the girl, and took the alleged perpetrator into custody. After a thorough interrogation, the 27-year-old was formally arrested. The legal framework invoked against him is stringent. He has been charged under multiple sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
The specific charges include Sections 7 read with 8, which pertain to Sexual Assault and its Punishment. Additionally, he faces charges under Sections 11(1) and 11(4) read with Section 12 of the same act, relating to Sexual Harassment of a child. The case was officially registered based on a formal complaint filed by the victim's mother, who stated that her daughter, a Class VIII student, was manipulated by the man on Instagram.
Aftermath and Child Welfare Protocols
Following the rescue, the minor girl was placed under the protective care of volunteers from a child helpline. Authorities have also followed the mandated procedure by informing the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which plays a crucial role in safeguarding the interests and well-being of children in such traumatic situations.
