In a swift operation, Chennai police recovered a stolen car and arrested two men on Wednesday, thanks to the find-my-device feature on a mobile phone left inside the vehicle. The incident unfolded at a petrol station in Vyasarpadi, highlighting the role of technology in modern crime-solving.
Theft at the Petrol Bunk
The victim, Melvin, a 36-year-old local Congress functionary, had stepped out to refuel his car. While he was engaged in conversation with the staff and settling the bill, two unidentified men seized the opportunity. They jumped into the unattended vehicle and drove away from the petrol bunk.
It was only when Melvin tried to alert the authorities that he realized his crucial mistake—he had left his mobile phone inside the car. The petrol bunk staff immediately called the police, setting the chain of events in motion.
GPS Tracking to the Rescue
Upon learning that the phone was still with the stolen car, Inspector Rajinikanth spearheaded the investigation using the device's in-built GPS tracking feature. The digital trail provided real-time location data, allowing police to monitor the car's movement across the city.
The tracking data revealed that the stolen car first travelled to Gummidipoondi and then moved towards Puzhal. A police team was dispatched to the last known location. When they arrived, they found the vehicle had been abandoned by the thieves.
Arrests and Investigation
Following leads from the recovery site and subsequent investigation, the police identified and apprehended the suspects. The arrested individuals are Surya, a 25-year-old bike mechanic from Kodungaiyur, and Bharath, 28, from Manali.
Both accused were produced before a court and have been remanded to judicial custody. Police officials confirmed that a further investigation is underway to uncover any potential links to other crimes or accomplices.
This case serves as a cautionary tale for vehicle owners about remaining vigilant in public spaces. It also underscores how everyday technology, like smartphone tracking features, can become a powerful tool for law enforcement in solving crimes rapidly.
