Chennai: Bailed Goondas Act Detenues Re-arrested for Extortion

In a swift operation, the Chennai police have re-arrested two notorious history-sheeters who were recently released on bail in a major weapons seizure case. The duo was apprehended for allegedly extorting money from local traders and shop owners in the Vyasarpadi area and were found in possession of narcotics and a weapon.

Police Nab Duo During Suspicious Loitering

Acting on specific intelligence, personnel from the Vyasarpadi police station intensified surveillance in the First Street area of 'A' Kalyana Puram on Thursday. Their vigilance paid off when they spotted two men behaving in a suspicious manner. The police team immediately approached and questioned them.

A subsequent frisking of the individuals led to a significant discovery. The police recovered a knife and approximately 1.3 kilograms of ganja (cannabis) from their possession. A formal case was registered on the spot, and both men were taken into custody.

Notorious History-Sheeters Identified

The arrested accused have been identified as Tamilarasan alias Thambidurai (40) and Tamilazhagan (39), both residents of Vyasarpadi. Police records reveal that the two are known history-sheeters with a serious criminal past.

Their previous arrest was linked to a high-profile investigation following the brutal murder of former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) state president, K Armstrong, on July 5, 2024. In the aftermath of that crime, police had conducted raids and recovered a cache of 51 deadly weapons, including sickles, knives, and swords, from the house of a relative of rowdy Nagendran. Tamilarasan and Tamilazhagan were among those detained in connection with that weapons seizure case and were later released on bail.

Return to Crime Despite Bail

However, instead of staying on the right side of the law, the duo allegedly returned to their old ways soon after their release. Police investigations indicate that they began systematically threatening and extorting money from shop owners and traders in their Vyasarpadi neighbourhood. This fresh arrest for extortion and possession of narcotics and a weapon underscores the challenges authorities face with repeat offenders out on bail.

The Vyasarpadi police are now delving deeper into their recent activities to uncover the full extent of their extortion racket and possible connections to other criminal networks in the region. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of the Chennai police to clamp down on organized crime and ensure the safety of local business communities.
