Chandigarh No-Fly Zone for Drones on Dec 24

In a significant security move, the entire Union Territory of Chandigarh will be declared a strict no-fly zone for drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on Tuesday, December 24. The decision comes in light of scheduled VVIP movements in the city and growing concerns over emerging security threats.

District Magistrate Issues Strict Order

District Magistrate Nishant Kumar Yadav has officially enacted the prohibition. The order explicitly cites emerging security threats and recent trends of terrorist activities where anti-national elements have used drones fitted with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The primary objective is to ensure the safety and security of the VVIPs as well as the general public during the high-profile event.

Legal Authority and Duration of Ban

The DM exercised powers vested under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 to implement this critical regulation. The restriction will be in force from the stroke of midnight, marking the start of December 24, and will remain effective throughout the entire day.

Addressing Modern Security Challenges

The official order underscores a proactive approach to modern security challenges. It highlights the urgent necessity to regulate drone usage in the UT to preempt any potential misuse by malicious actors. This step reflects a broader national pattern of tightening airspace security during major public events and high-level visits, especially given the increasing incidents of drone-related threats along the country's borders and in sensitive zones.

Authorities are expected to deploy enhanced ground security and surveillance measures to enforce the ban effectively. Residents and visitors in Chandigarh are advised to strictly comply with the order, as any unauthorized drone activity will be dealt with severely under the law.
