Building Collapse in Chandigarh Industrial Area
A multi-storey building collapsed in Chandigarh's Industrial Area Phase 2 on Saturday, prompting an immediate rescue operation. According to officials, the incident occurred around 2:30 pm, and several people are feared trapped under the debris.
Rescue Teams Deployed
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police have been deployed to the site. A team of 50 NDRF personnel is conducting search and rescue operations using cutting equipment and sniffer dogs. Ambulances and fire tenders are also present.
Casualties and Injuries
At least three people have been confirmed dead, and 15 others are injured, according to a senior police officer. The injured have been rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and other hospitals. The death toll may rise as rescue efforts continue.
Eyewitness Accounts
Witnesses reported hearing a loud blast before the collapse. 'We heard a huge sound, and within seconds, the building came down. People were screaming and running,' said a local shopkeeper. Another witness stated that the building was under renovation and may have been structurally weakened.
Official Statements
Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner said, 'We are coordinating with all agencies to ensure a swift rescue. The cause of the collapse will be investigated.' The building owner has been detained for questioning.
Ongoing Rescue Operation
The rescue operation is expected to continue through the night. Authorities have urged people to avoid the area. Mobile phone networks have been temporarily disrupted to facilitate communication among rescue teams.
