Chennai: The anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a disproportionate assets case against a retired chief commissioner of income tax from Chennai and his wife.
IRS Officer Accused of Amassing Wealth
IRS officer N Rengaraj allegedly acquired assets worth ₹1.82 crore between 2010 and 2024 through unknown sources of income. The CBI initiated the investigation based on a complaint that Rengaraj accumulated wealth while serving as principal commissioner of income tax in Coimbatore from 2021 to 2024.
Properties and Assets Acquired
It was confirmed that Rengaraj and his wife, Uma Maheswari, purchased property in Trichy, Coimbatore, and Pudukottai. According to the FIR, the couple built two palatial houses in Coimbatore and a farmhouse in Trichy, in addition to buying luxury cars. They also held high-value fixed deposits and balances in various banks.
Investigation and FIR Registration
After preliminary verification, the CBI wrote to the state and central governments to investigate and subsequently registered an FIR.
Background of the Accused
A 1991-batch IRS officer, Rengaraj served in various capacities before retiring as chief commissioner of income tax in Chennai last year. His wife, Uma Maheswari, is the daughter of S M Raju, who was elected as an ADMK MLA in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 1977 to 1981.
