Fatal Collision on NH-27 in Jalpaiguri
At least one person died and 25 others sustained injuries after a passenger bus collided with a truck on National Highway-27 in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Sunday. Preliminary investigations indicate that rain-slicked roads may have contributed to the accident, which occurred in the Ulladabri area, temporarily disrupting traffic on the busy highway as rescue teams rushed to the scene.
Police and Rescue Operations
"Local sources have reported at least one death. The injured persons have been shifted to a hospital and their condition is being monitored," a senior police officer stated. Police emphasized that the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, though initial findings point to slippery road conditions caused by rainfall. "Prima facie, it seems slippery road conditions due to rainfall may have contributed to the mishap. However, an investigation has been initiated and all aspects are being examined," the officer added.
Government Response and Compensation
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed grief over the loss of life and announced financial assistance for the victims' families. The next of kin of the deceased will receive Rs 5 lakh, while those seriously injured will be given Rs 1 lakh each. Passengers with minor injuries will receive Rs 50,000. In a social media post, the CM said he was "deeply saddened" by the accident and extended condolences. "My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones in this horrific incident. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved kin and pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured passengers," he wrote.
Coordination and Medical Aid
CM Adhikari confirmed that the Jalpaiguri district administration and police are carrying out rescue and relief operations. He has directed North Bengal Development Minister Nisith Pramanik and Minister of State for Transport Anandamay Barman to coordinate with district authorities and oversee rescue efforts. The state government will bear the entire cost of treatment for the injured admitted to government hospitals and extend all possible assistance to the affected families.
