Five days have passed since the brutal murder of Buddhist monk Indrabonsho Bhikkhu Mahathero in Assam's Tinsukia district, yet local police authorities remain without any significant leads in identifying the perpetrators. The ongoing investigation stall has prompted three prominent Buddhist organizations to submit formal memorandums demanding immediate action and a transparent, time-bound investigation.
Gruesome Discovery at Ancient Monastery
The 58-year-old spiritual leader, who served as the chief monk of Inthem Mungong Buddha Vihar, was discovered dead inside the monastery on the morning of November 23. The historic monastery, established in 1885 and located approximately 22 kilometers from Margherita town, became the scene of a horrific crime that has shaken the local Buddhist community.
Police officials investigating the case recovered a blood-stained axe beside the body, with preliminary evidence suggesting the monk was attacked while sleeping. The victim sustained deep cuts on his face, indicating the violent nature of the assault that ended his life.
Buddhist Community Demands Justice
Three influential Buddhist organizations—Purbanchal Bhikkhu Sangha, All Assam Buddhists' Association, and Federation of Barua Buddhists' Welfare Association of Assam—have taken formal action by submitting separate memorandums to the Margherita co-district commissioner. These documents urgently appeal to authorities to exhaust all resources in bringing the culprits to justice.
Gyanopal Bhikkhu, president of All Assam Buddhists' Association, expressed the community's anguish while reaffirming their commitment to peaceful principles. "Indrabonsho Bhikkhu devoted his entire life to spreading the teachings of Lord Buddha," he stated. "While we remain steadfast in the path of ahimsa, we cannot keep silent in the face of injustice. No one, regardless of influence or motive, should escape accountability for shedding the blood of a monk, who embodied love and kindness."
Peaceful Protests Until Resolution
The Buddhist community has announced its intention to continue peaceful yet firm protests until justice is served in the case. This tragic incident has not only robbed the community of a respected spiritual guide but has also raised serious concerns about the safety of religious figures in the region.
As the investigation enters its sixth day without breakthrough, pressure mounts on law enforcement agencies to accelerate their efforts and provide answers to a grieving community seeking closure and justice for their beloved spiritual leader.
