Punjab Human Rights Body Calls for Judicial Probe into BSF Soldier's Custodial Death
The Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO), a prominent non-governmental organization, has formally demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into the controversial and suspicious death of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Jaswinder Singh. The soldier died while being held in the custody of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), raising serious concerns about human rights violations and custodial procedures.
Allegations of Custodial Torture and Rights Violations
In a strongly worded statement, the PHRO characterized the jawan's death as a "serious case of custodial torture" and an apparent violation of fundamental human rights. The organization has expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the arrest and subsequent handling of the case, questioning whether proper legal protocols were followed throughout the process.
The rights body highlighted that Jaswinder Singh was arrested in Jammu but was subsequently transported to Amritsar, while his family members were allegedly kept completely unaware of the reasons for his detention. "This raises serious questions about the adherence to legal procedures," stated Sarabjit Singh Verka, the principal investigator of PHRO, who was joined by Dr. Khushal Singh, the media in-charge, in making these allegations public.
Family's Allegations and Demands for Justice
The PHRO has brought forward disturbing allegations from the deceased soldier's family, who claim that Jaswinder Singh suffered physical assault and mental harassment during his time in NCB custody. "Such behaviour towards a soldier serving the nation is unacceptable in any civilised society," Verka emphasized, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
The organization has put forth several specific demands, including:
- A comprehensive judicial inquiry supervised by a sitting High Court judge to establish the complete truth of the incident
- Registration of a murder case against concerned NCB officials if the post-mortem examination confirms evidence of torture
- Videography of the post-mortem procedure conducted by a panel of expert doctors under strict magisterial supervision
- Adequate compensation for the victim's grieving family
- Transportation of the body to his native place with full military honors
Threat of Escalation to Higher Authorities
The Punjab Human Rights Organisation has announced its intention to approach the Punjab Human Rights Commission to ensure proper accountability of the officials involved in this case. Furthermore, the organization has issued a stern warning that if concrete and meaningful steps are not taken by the government authorities to address this matter, they will escalate the case to national and international human rights bodies.
This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing controversy surrounding the death of the BSF jawan, bringing increased scrutiny to custodial procedures and human rights protections within law enforcement agencies. The case continues to draw attention to the need for transparency and accountability in matters involving security personnel and custodial deaths.
