Bihar mob burns police vehicle over false death rumour

A violent mob in Bihar's Gopalganj district set a police vehicle on fire following false rumors about the death of a motorcycle rider in a road accident. The incident occurred after three young men met with an accident while trying to avoid a speeding SUV.

What Triggered the Violence?

According to Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Avdhesh Dixit, the chain of events began between 6:30-7:00 pm when three boys were riding a motorcycle. A police vehicle was passing through the same area when a Scorpio SUV came speeding from the opposite direction.

"While trying to avoid the Scorpio, the bike riders met with an accident," SP Dixit told news agency ANI. "They got injured and were taken to the hospital for treatment."

How Rumors Sparked the Mob Fury

The situation escalated rapidly when false information began circulating at the accident scene. "Shortly after the incident, rumors spread at the scene that the bike rider had died," the police officer explained.

This misinformation enraged the crowd present at the location, who then targeted the police vehicle. The angry mob set the police vehicle on fire, creating a tense situation that required immediate police intervention.

Police Response and Investigation

Law enforcement authorities quickly mobilized to control the situation. "To disperse the crowd, we also used tear gas," confirmed SP Dixit. "The situation at the scene is normal now. Some people have been detained."

The police have launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. "It is not yet clear which vehicle caused the accident," Dixit stated, adding that "an investigation will determine how the accident occurred."

The police have assured strict action against those responsible for the violence. "Those responsible for this mischief will be identified, and action will be taken against them," the SP warned.
