In a major crackdown on organized crime, the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar has initiated decisive action against powerful mafia networks operating within the state. The unit is preparing to confiscate properties worth crores of rupees from groups involved in illegal sand mining, land grabbing, and fraudulent examination schemes.
Multi-Pronged Action Against Mafias
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the EOU, Manavjeet Singh Dhillon, addressed the media on Monday at the police headquarters in Patna. He outlined the unit's aggressive strategy to dismantle these illicit operations. The EOU has tightened its grip on eight land mafia groups and eleven sand mafia syndicates.
"The EOU is preparing to confiscate property worth about Rs 39.79 crore from the eight land mafias and around Rs 15.09 crore from the 11 sand mafias," Dhillon stated. This combined action targets assets valued at approximately ₹55 crore.
Exam Mafia Busted for Defrauding Job Seekers
Alongside the crackdown on resource-based mafias, the EOU has made significant headway against a notorious examination mafia. This gang was allegedly cheating candidates by making false promises of success in recruitment examinations, including for coveted positions like police drivers.
"Based on secret information, the main accused from Sheikhpura district was arrested. Another active member of the gang was also taken into custody recently," the DIG informed. He added that interrogation of the arrested individuals has yielded several crucial pieces of information, which are now guiding further investigative steps.
Scrutiny on Bank Official's Assets
In a related development, the EOU has also turned its focus on a development officer of the Pataliputra Central Co-operative Bank. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the officer possesses substantial property holdings, the legitimacy of which is now under intense scrutiny by the unit.
Commitment to Curbing Organized Crime
DIG Dhillon emphasized the EOU's unwavering commitment to tackling organized crime in all its forms. The unit's current campaign is squarely focused on mafias that exploit land, sand, and the aspirations of job-seeking youth through fraudulent means.
The EOU is ensuring that strict legal action is taken against all individuals and networks involved in these illegal activities. This comprehensive operation signals a robust attempt to restore lawful conduct in these sectors and protect public resources and trust.
