Tragic Early Morning Crash Claims Life of Young Girl in Bhopal
A devastating accident in the early hours of Sunday has left a family shattered and a community in mourning in Bhopal. A seven-year-old girl, Khushi Gaihar, was crushed to death while sleeping, and four members of her family sustained injuries after a speeding LPG tanker went out of control and ploughed into a cluster of makeshift homes.
Details of the Horrific Incident
The tragedy unfolded around 2:20 am near Gol Chauraha in the Bhanpur area, within the jurisdiction of the Chhola Mandir Police Station. According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, the tanker smashed through a boundary wall, veered off the road, and rammed directly into at least three huts located on an open patch near the roadside. The impact was so severe that two additional huts were also damaged in the collision.
Khushi Gaihar, who was asleep inside one of the huts with her family, was tragically crushed under the massive vehicle. Rescue efforts continued through the night, with the young girl remaining trapped beneath the tanker's wheels for more than two agonizing hours before she could be extricated.
A Life Cut Short: Remembering Khushi Gaihar
Khushi, who had just turned seven years old, spent her days helping her family sell soft toys like teddy bears and small playthings by the roadside near Gol Chauraha. "From morning till late evening, she would sit beside her parents, calling out to passersby, holding up colourful toys in the hope of making a sale that would help the family get through the day," recounted a local dweller who knew the family well.
The family, originally from Misrikhganj village in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district, had been living in the slum cluster near Gol Chauraha for some time, earning a meager living through their roadside toy sales. On Saturday night, after dinner, all family members were asleep inside their humble dwelling when the tanker crashed into their home without warning.
Chaos and Rescue Efforts in the Dead of Night
Police officials stated that most residents in the locality were asleep when a loud crash followed by terrified screams shattered the silence, causing immediate panic across the settlement. Locals ran out of their homes and began attempting to rescue those trapped under the debris even before police could arrive at the scene.
Khushi was eventually extricated in the presence of police personnel and rushed to a nearby private hospital in Bhanpur, where doctors declared her dead upon arrival. Her parents, Monu Gaihar (35) and Manisha Gaihar, along with her younger brothers Aarush (5) and Tute (4), sustained injuries to their limbs in the crash. They were first taken to a nearby medical facility and later shifted to Hamidia Hospital and a private hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Police Investigation and Official Response
Police teams from both Chhola Mandir and Nishatpura police stations reached the scene soon after receiving information and launched a coordinated rescue operation with assistance from local residents. The tanker has been seized by authorities, and a technical inspection is currently underway.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was found to be in proper mechanical condition, raising suspicion that the accident may have occurred due to driver fatigue or driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver fled the scene immediately after the crash and remains absconding as of Sunday.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Akshay Chaudhary confirmed that the accident claimed the life of the young girl while leaving her parents and siblings injured. A formal case has been registered, and intensive efforts are underway to locate and arrest the driver responsible for this tragedy.
Community Grief and Administrative Action
The scene at Gol Chauraha was one of profound grief as family members were seen weeping inconsolably on the road. "We are very poor people, sir… please help us. Everyone was asleep, and we lost a child," pleaded another resident present at the spot, highlighting the vulnerability of the community.
Administrative officials, including the local tehsildar, visited the site on Sunday morning and conducted a thorough on-the-spot inspection. In response to the tragedy, a proposal has been sent to provide financial assistance to the grieving family, though no amount of compensation can replace the life that has been lost.
This tragic incident has once again raised serious questions about road safety, driver accountability, and the precarious living conditions of marginalized communities who often reside in vulnerable locations near busy roads. As the investigation continues and the search for the driver intensifies, a family mourns the loss of a child whose bright future was abruptly ended by a speeding vehicle in the dead of night.
