Berhampur Pocso Court Delivers 20-Year Sentence for Rape of Minor
In a significant ruling, the special Pocso court in Berhampur on Wednesday handed down a sentence of 20 years of rigorous imprisonment to a 28-year-old man convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl after kidnapping her approximately four years ago. Additional district-cum-special Pocso court judge Pranati Pattnaik imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict. Her family initiated a search after she failed to return, and on June 1, the man informed her mother via phone that he had taken the girl to Bhubaneswar.
Promptly, the girl's mother filed a First Information Report (FIR) on the same day. Police registered a case under the Pocso Act, leading to the arrest of the man on June 6 and the successful rescue of the girl. It was noted that the convict had been out on bail since August 28, 2023, pending trial.
