Major Security Breach at Bengaluru Central Prison Exposes Communication Loopholes
In a shocking incident at the Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara, Bengaluru, three undertrial prisoners managed to record videos using mobile phones and falsely claimed that Director General of Police (DGP) and Director General, Prisons & Correctional Services, Alok Kumar, had provided the devices to them. Preliminary investigations reveal this was a deliberate attempt to demoralise the officer and disrupt ongoing prison reforms.
Details of the Breach and Viral Videos
The videos were recorded on the evening of March 27 and quickly shared with family and friends. By Saturday morning, the clips had gone viral, with a regional news portal receiving them around 9 am, prompting an immediate internal probe. In the videos, the inmates mocked DGP Alok Kumar by accusing him of supplying the phones and even discussed an IPL match between RCB and SRH on March 28, predicting an RCB win with the phrase, “eesala nu cup namde” (“This year also, the cup is ours.”).
Recovery of Hidden Devices and Gang Links
Chief superintendent of Prison Anshu Kumar and his team traced the leak source, recovering two mobile phones concealed inside a pipe in a toilet chamber. The devices were carefully packed in milk packets and hidden in the pipeline. The undertrial prisoners were identified as Darshan and his younger brother Abhi, accused in a murder case reported in Hennur Bande about two-and-a-half years ago. The voice in the clips belongs to another inmate, Zypsin Daniel, with officials noting the trio are associated with the Sunkadkatte Rakshit gang.
Trigger for the Incident: Barrack Shifts
According to DGP Alok Kumar, the videos were recorded after the prison administration initiated a new system of shifting inmates to different barracks based on the alphabetical order of their names. This move aims to break communication links and prevent coordinated criminal activities. Darshan was shifted to a quarantine barrack on March 27, with the video recorded just minutes before his relocation. Investigators believe the clips were leaked to derail reforms and tarnish the prison administration's image.
Disciplinary Actions and Network Concerns
Following the breach, three warders—Niranjan Kamat, Hanumantappa Hadpad, and Shivanand Karlabatti—have been suspended for dereliction of duty during the night of March 27 and morning of March 28. Action is also being initiated against the jailer on supervisory duty. A complaint was filed at the Parappana Agrahara Police Station on March 28 against the accused inmates.
In a concerning development, authorities detected active Airtel network signals in certain prison areas, raising serious questions about communication loopholes. Officials have warned the telecom provider to take corrective measures to prevent misuse.
Commitment to Prison Reforms
Despite the incident, prison authorities asserted that reform measures will continue. A senior official stated, “Efforts to streamline and improve prison administration will not be deterred by vested interests attempting to disrupt the system.” The breach highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining security while implementing changes aimed at curbing illegal activities within correctional facilities.
