A tragic incident unfolded in Nelamangala, Bengaluru, on Tuesday evening, resulting in the death of a 31-year-old painter. The deceased, identified as Vijay Kumar, allegedly died by suicide following a heated argument with his mother over money to buy alcohol.
A Fateful Evening Argument
According to police reports, the incident occurred at their family home. Vijay Kumar, a daily-wage painter known to be a chronic alcoholic, had a confrontation with his mother, Ambuja. The argument centered on his demand for cash to purchase alcohol. Ambuja, a single parent who suffers from health issues affecting her mobility, told him she had very little money left.
Enraged by her refusal, Vijay threatened to hang himself. However, Ambuja, who was seated at the entrance, did not intervene as he had made similar threats in the past. Police stated that Vijay then proceeded to tie a rope to a ceiling hook.
The Tragic Turn of Events
In what investigators believe was an inebriated state, Vijay Kumar reportedly became trapped in the noose. The incident, which police are treating as an unnatural death, took place around 8 PM on Tuesday. Ambuja discovered him hanging and immediately alerted the neighbours. Unfortunately, he was declared dead by the time help arrived.
The Nelamangala Town police have registered a case and an investigation is currently underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
Background of Financial Strain
The tragedy sheds light on a history of familial strain exacerbated by Vijay's alcoholism. Police revealed that he was irregular at work and often harassed his ailing mother for money to fund his habit. In a previous instance, he had even used her debit card to withdraw money that was deposited through the state government's Gruhalakshmi scheme, a welfare initiative meant for his mother's support.
This heartbreaking case highlights the devastating consequences of substance abuse and its impact on vulnerable families. The local community in Nelamangala has been left in shock by the sudden demise.
