Residents of Thyagarajanagar in Bengaluru are on high alert after a series of disturbing incidents where a local man allegedly targeted and assaulted several children in the area. The accused, identified as 35-year-old former gym trainer Ranjan M, also known as Ranjith, has been arrested by the police, who have cited his mental health condition as a significant factor in the attacks.
A Series of Alarming Encounters
According to complaints filed by worried parents, Ranjan recently engaged in a pattern of aggressive behavior directed at children. He is accused of attempting to hit a young girl with his motorcycle, pulling the hair of a boy who was riding a bicycle, and following another girl on a subsequent day before striking her with his elbow. The community, alarmed by these events, gathered CCTV evidence which was subsequently handed over to the authorities.
The Most Serious Assault on a Five-Year-Old
The most severe incident took place on December 14 on Old Post Office Road in Doddamavalli near Lalbagh. A five-year-old boy, who was visiting his maternal uncle's house and playing badminton with other children, was allegedly kicked by Ranjan. The assault resulted in an injury above the child's eyebrow and scratches on his hands and feet, requiring hospital treatment. The boy's mother filed a formal police complaint the same day, asserting the attack was deliberate. CCTV footage from the area confirmed the sequence of events.
Police Investigation and Mental Health Angle
A senior police officer involved in the case confirmed that Ranjan appears to be mentally unstable and is currently undergoing psychiatric treatment. During interrogation, Ranjan confessed to assaulting several children. He reportedly told the police that the noise from children shouting and playing on the road caused him to feel distracted and agitated, leading to his actions.
The officer noted that Ranjan, who is unmarried and lives locally, has no prior criminal history. He was arrested but later released on station bail. His parents have since taken him to Madurai for further medical treatment. The police are continuing to collect his medical records and are assessing the situation to prevent any further incidents. They have also urged parents in the locality to remain vigilant.
