Bengaluru Prison Crackdown: 79 Phones, Weapons Seized in Reform Drive
Bengaluru Central Prison Seizes 79 Mobiles, Weapons

In a major crackdown on illegal activities within its walls, Bengaluru Central Prison authorities have confiscated a significant haul of prohibited items, including dozens of mobile phones and sharp weapons. The seizure occurred during a rigorous, surprise inspection conducted as part of the ongoing prison reform initiative.

Surprise Night Inspection Nets Contraband

The operation took place on Tuesday night, between 8:15 PM and 8:50 PM, and was carried out by duty officers and staff. The inspection was conducted under the direct supervision of Alok Kumar, the Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services). This raid is a key component of the 'Karagruha Sudarana Sankalpa Abhiyana' drive aimed at cleansing the prison system.

During this specific search, officials uncovered six mobile phones, five SIM cards, five sharp weapons, two chargers, and four earphones. Following the discovery, a formal case was registered on Wednesday at the Parappana Agrahara police station. The charges have been filed under Section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons (Amendment) Act, 2022, among other relevant legal provisions.

A Pattern of Violations and Intensified Enforcement

This single raid is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of intensified enforcement. Prison officials reported that a total of eight First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed in connection with the recovery of banned items from within the prison between November 11 and December 17.

The cumulative haul from this period is staggering and highlights the scale of the problem:

  • 79 mobile phones
  • 59 SIM cards
  • 19 sharp objects/weapons
  • 16 chargers
  • 14 earphones
  • Rs 64,880 in cash

This massive recovery underscores the persistent attempts by certain inmates, often with alleged assistance from some prison personnel, to flout regulations and smuggle contraband, despite heightened surveillance measures.

Legal Action and Recognition for Staff

In response to these findings, the police have taken stern legal action. Cases have been registered not only against inmates found in possession of the prohibited items but also against individuals who assisted in smuggling these materials into the facility and those who used them.

On a positive note, the diligent work of the inspection team was officially recognized. DGP Alok Kumar awarded a cash prize of Rs 12,000 and letters of appreciation to the officers and staff involved in the successful surprise check for their exemplary service. This move is seen as an effort to boost morale and encourage integrity within the prison service.

The continued seizures point to a deep-rooted challenge in managing contraband within correctional facilities. The ongoing 'Karagruha Sudarana Sankalpa Abhiyana' reform drive aims to systematically address these issues through stricter vigilance, surprise checks, and legal consequences for violators.
