Bengaluru Cab Driver Apprehended in Gold Chain Snatching Cases Targeting Local Shopkeepers
In a significant breakthrough for local law enforcement, a 32-year-old cab driver has been arrested in Bengaluru for his alleged involvement in a series of gold chain snatching incidents targeting shopkeepers. The police have successfully recovered approximately 28 grams of gold ornaments from the accused, shedding light on a pattern of crimes that has unsettled the small business community in the city.
Details of the First Incident on January 29
The investigation began after a condiments store owner filed a police report detailing a disturbing encounter. According to the complaint, a man arrived at the shop late at night in a car. He purchased a cigarette and was seen smoking while conversing with a friend who remained seated inside the vehicle. After a short while, the individual requested another cigarette. When the shopkeeper handed it over, the accused, later identified as Sharanappa C, allegedly seized the shopkeeper by the neck and attempted to snatch his gold chain. Despite the victim's resistance, Sharanappa managed to tear away a portion of the chain before fleeing the scene in his vehicle.
Second Snatching Incident on February 3
In a separate but similar occurrence on February 3, another shopkeeper reported to the police that two men had arrived at his establishment on a two-wheeler. One of the individuals pretended to be interested in purchasing an item. In a sudden and violent move, he snatched the shopkeeper's 24-gram gold mangalya chain before both perpetrators quickly escaped on their vehicle. This incident further highlighted the brazen nature of the crimes and the targeted approach towards small shop owners.
Arrest and Confession of the Accused
The Bengaluru police successfully apprehended Sharanappa on February 16 following a thorough investigation. Upon his arrest, he confessed to committing both chain snatching crimes along with an associate who remains at large. In his statement to the authorities, Sharanappa revealed that he specifically targeted small shops, using the guise of a customer to gain the trust of the shopkeepers before executing the snatchings. This modus operandi allowed him to catch the victims off guard, facilitating quick getaways.
The recovery of 28 grams of gold ornaments from Sharanappa has provided crucial evidence in the case. Police officials have emphasized that this arrest is part of ongoing efforts to curb street crimes and ensure the safety of local business owners. The investigation continues as authorities work to locate and apprehend the associate involved in these incidents.
This case underscores the vulnerabilities faced by small shopkeepers and the importance of community vigilance. Residents and business owners are advised to remain cautious and report any suspicious activities to the police immediately. The Bengaluru police have assured the public that they are committed to maintaining law and order and will take stringent action against those involved in such criminal activities.
