Bangladeshi National Posed as Hindu Preacher, Arrested in Rishikesh After 8 Years
In a significant development, a Bangladeshi national who had been living illegally in India since 2016 by disguising himself as a Hindu preacher was apprehended near the iconic Lakshman Jhula in Rishikesh on Friday. The arrest has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised serious concerns about immigration security.
Details of the Arrest and Investigation
The individual, identified as Saniur Rahman alias Satyasadhu, is a resident of Faridpur in Bangladesh. Police reports indicate that he initially entered India through Nepal in 2016 and never returned to his home country. Rahman had been residing illegally in Ghaziabad, where he managed to evade authorities for nearly a decade.
To conceal his true identity, Rahman adopted the alias Satyanishth Arya and went to great lengths to establish a false persona. He successfully obtained a counterfeit Aadhaar card, which he used to facilitate his illegal stay and activities across India. This fraudulent documentation allowed him to operate under the radar for an extended period.
Religious Disguise and Nationwide Activities
Posing as a Hindu religious figure, Rahman delivered lectures on religion and philosophy in various parts of the country. He frequently visited Rishikesh and the Laxman Jhula area, where he established numerous connections within the local spiritual community. His ability to blend in as a preacher enabled him to travel extensively without raising suspicion.
Rahman arrived at an ashram in Lakshman Jhula on Thursday, just one day before his arrest. During a routine security check on Friday, police detained him for questioning. The interrogation led to the recovery of a Bangladeshi passport and other incriminating documents that confirmed his illegal status and activities.
Legal Proceedings and Further Investigations
A formal case has been registered against Rahman under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025. Lakshman Jhula SHO Surya Bhushan Negi revealed that Rahman is also associated with a right-wing outfit in Ghaziabad, adding a complex layer to the investigation.
Police authorities are now delving deeper into his connections and potential networks. The investigation aims to uncover any broader implications of his illegal stay and activities, including possible links to other individuals or organizations. This case highlights ongoing challenges in monitoring and preventing illegal immigration through fraudulent means.
The arrest underscores the importance of vigilant security measures and thorough verification processes in sensitive areas like religious and spiritual hubs. Authorities continue to urge citizens to report any suspicious activities to help maintain national security and integrity.
