Two Arrested, Three Held in Balaramapuram Assault Over Public Drinking Dispute
Balaramapuram: Two held for assault over public drinking

Police in Balaramapuram, Thiruvananthapuram, have made significant headway in a case of brutal assault, arresting two individuals and taking three others into custody. The violent incident, which left a 27-year-old man with grievous injuries, stemmed from a dispute over public consumption of alcohol.

Dispute Over Roadside Drinking Escalates to Violence

The chain of events began on September 10, 2025, near the complainant's residence. According to police reports, the accused and their associates were consuming alcohol on the roadside. The complainant, identified as Ranjith (27), objected to this public drinking, leading to a heated verbal argument. Authorities believe that pre-existing personal enmity between the parties fueled the confrontation, causing it to quickly spiral out of control.

A Brutal Attack with Bottle and Iron Rod

The situation turned physically violent later. Ranjith was allegedly intercepted by the accused behind the Balaramapuram panchayat office while he was riding his motorcycle. The attackers reportedly forced him off his bike before launching a savage assault.

During the attack, one of the accused struck Ranjith on the head with a beer bottle, causing deep, bleeding wounds. Another assailant hit him with an iron rod, which resulted in a fracture to his hand. After leaving Ranjith seriously injured on the spot, the attackers fled the scene.

Police Action and Aftermath

Following the assault, Ranjith was rushed to a hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries. The Balaramapuram police registered a case and launched an investigation.

On Monday, police arrested two youths in connection with the crime. The arrested individuals have been named as Sarath (24), a resident of Balaramapuram, and Sudhakar Balu (21), from Thalayal. As part of the same operation, police also took three more accused into custody for their alleged involvement in the attack.

All the accused are scheduled to be produced before the court on Tuesday. The police action highlights a firm response to violent crimes stemming from public nuisance and personal disputes in the area.
