A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 47-year-old autorickshaw driver on the service road of the busy Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway (NH-48) late Monday night. The fatal collision occurred near the Baba Bhishm Das Temple in Manesar, highlighting yet again the perilous conditions on Gurgaon's roads.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The victim, identified as Jayveer, a resident of Manesar, was returning home around 10 pm when his auto was struck head-on by a loading tempo truck. The truck was reportedly coming from the Jaipur side at high speed. The impact of the crash was severe, and the location was particularly hazardous due to ongoing road work, which had diverted traffic along the roadside near the temple.
Jayveer sustained critical injuries in the collision. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by locals and emergency responders. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival, citing fatal head injuries as the cause of death.
Police Investigation and Case Registered
Manesar police received information about the accident around 11 pm through an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV). A team, led by Investigating Officer ASI Ranveer from Manesar police station, reached the spot. They found both vehicles parked on the side of the road, but the driver of the tempo truck had fled the scene.
"We are yet to arrest the accused driver. The body was handed to the family following an autopsy on Tuesday," stated ASI Ranveer. Based on a complaint filed by the victim's brother, Surendra Kumar, who alleged overspeeding and negligence by the truck driver, a formal case was registered. The charges have been filed under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the unidentified truck driver.
Gurgaon's Alarming Road Safety Record
This incident adds to a grim statistic for Gurgaon. Police data reveals that nearly 500 deaths have been reported in over 1,100 road accidents on the city's roads this year alone. Authorities have noted a spike in accidents during November and December compared to the previous two months, attributing it largely to foggy weather conditions.
Commenting on the seasonal dangers, Traffic Police Spokesperson Vikas Verma advised caution. "People should refrain from taking sudden turns and parking their vehicles on the road, as that may cause collisions due to dense fog and poor visibility," he said. The accident near Baba Bhishm Das Temple underscores the urgent need for heightened vigilance, especially on service roads and under construction zones during night hours and winter months.
