Police ASI Suspended After Viral Video Shows Slapping Complainant in Bilaspur Station
A police station in Bilaspur, intended as a place to record public grievances, has become the center of a major controversy. A shocking CCTV video has surfaced, allegedly showing an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) repeatedly slapping a complainant inside the Ratanpur police station premises.
Details of the Alleged Assault
The incident occurred on April 12 when the complainant, Vinod Jaiswal, a coal trader from Ratanpur, visited the police station to seek information about an old case. According to Jaiswal's account, ASI Dinesh Tiwari became enraged, verbally abused him, and then proceeded to slap him an estimated 15 to 20 times.
Jaiswal further alleged that the officer threatened him, stating he would "strip him of his netagiri" (a term implying political influence) and send him to jail. There are also claims that money was demanded in relation to filing or moving the case report, adding a layer of corruption to the physical assault.
Official Response and Actions Taken
After the video went viral on social media, Bilaspur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajnesh Singh took swift action. ASI Dinesh Tiwari has been suspended from duty, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against him based on the complainant's request.
SSP Singh has also ordered a formal inquiry into the entire incident, highlighting the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the matter. The viral CCTV clip is believed to have been leaked from within the police station itself, raising questions about internal transparency and accountability.
Background and Implications
Vinod Jaiswal is reported to have close proximity to BJP leaders, which may have influenced the dynamics of the encounter, though the police have not confirmed this as a factor in the assault. The incident has sparked outrage, emphasizing concerns about police misconduct and the treatment of citizens seeking justice.
This case underscores the need for stricter oversight in police stations, especially those designated for grievance redressal. The suspension and FIR mark initial steps, but the ongoing inquiry will be crucial in determining further disciplinary measures and restoring public trust.
