An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) named Gurpreet Singh, posted at the Sultanpur Lodhi police station, has been suspended following an incident where his service revolver accidentally discharged while he was traveling on a moving bus. The incident occurred near Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district on Tuesday evening, causing panic among passengers. No injuries were reported.

Details of the Incident

The ASI was returning from duty and boarded a private bus. According to eyewitnesses, while the bus was in motion, the revolver slipped from his holster and fell to the floor, discharging a bullet. The sound of the gunshot created chaos, with passengers screaming and some trying to alight from the moving vehicle. The driver stopped the bus immediately, and the ASI managed to secure the weapon.

Police Action

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kapurthala, Sandeep Garg, confirmed the suspension. He stated that a preliminary inquiry revealed negligence on the part of the ASI, who failed to secure his weapon properly. The SSP added that a departmental inquiry has been initiated, and strict action will be taken against the erring officer.
