Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, the Counter Intelligence (CI) team in Amritsar has successfully dismantled an illegal arms-smuggling module, leading to the arrest of three accused individuals. This operation marks a significant breakthrough in enhancing security measures during this important national event.
Details of the Arrests and Seizures
The Punjab Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, issued a release on Saturday, confirming the arrests. The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Mani, a resident of Baghwanpur; Sehajpal Singh, from village Vichhoa; and Diljanpreet Singh, from village Shehzada, all located within the Amritsar district.
Recovered Weapons and Evidence
During the operation, the police recovered a substantial cache of illegal firearms. This included two 9MM pistols and one .30 bore pistol, along with 15 live cartridges. In addition to the weapons, law enforcement teams impounded a motorcycle used by the accused, which is believed to have been involved in their illicit activities.
Investigation and Criminal Links
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the arrested individuals were acting under the directions of gangsters based abroad. According to the DGP, they allegedly planned to carry out a serious criminal activity, highlighting the transnational nature of this smuggling network.
Intelligence-Led Operation
The CI Amritsar team launched an intelligence-led operation to intercept the accused. They were apprehended while traveling on the Amritsar-Fatehgrah Churian Road towards Muradpura, demonstrating the effectiveness of proactive policing in thwarting potential threats.
Legal Actions and Case Registration
A formal case has been registered under sections 25 and 25(1)(a) of the Arms Act, as well as section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. The case is being handled at the Police Station State Special Operation Cell in Amritsar, ensuring a thorough legal process against the accused.
This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by Punjab Police to combat illegal arms trafficking and maintain public safety, especially during high-profile events like Republic Day. The successful bust serves as a warning to criminal elements and reinforces the commitment of law enforcement agencies to uphold security in the region.
