A special court in Ahmedabad has delivered a stern verdict in a significant drug trafficking case, sentencing four individuals to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years. The court also imposed a hefty fine of Rs 2 lakh on each convict, marking a strong stance against narcotics-related crimes.
The Conviction and the Judge's Stern Remarks
Special Judge Kruti Trivedi convicted the four accused—Jansher Khan, Usman Babu Shaikh, Naazim Khan Pathan, and Sajid Khan Pathan—under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. While pronouncing the judgment, Judge Trivedi emphasized the severe societal damage caused by the drug trade.
The judge stated that the abuse of narcotics is a destructive social evil that tears apart the very fabric of society. She highlighted that drug trafficking has a profoundly negative impact on the nation's economy. Furthermore, the court noted that funds generated from such illegal activities are often funneled into other unlawful enterprises, including the promotion of terrorism, which can distort economic policies and jeopardize the country's future.
"In such circumstances, strict action should be taken against crimes related to narcotics," the judge asserted, justifying the severe punishment.
The NCB Bust and Seizure Details
The case stemmed from a major operation by the Narcotics Control Bureau's (NCB) Ahmedabad zonal unit in May 2020. In a coordinated effort, NCB officials apprehended three of the convicted persons—Jansher Khan, Usman Babu Shaikh, and Naazim Khan Pathan.
The arrest led to the seizure of a massive consignment of 305.4 kilograms of ganja (marijuana). The narcotics were recovered from two vehicles used by the accused for transportation. The fourth accused, Sajid Khan Pathan, was arrested later during the course of the investigation conducted by the agency.
