Tragic Midnight Fire Claims Lives of Young Business Couple in Limbdi Bungalow

A devastating fire that erupted around midnight on Friday in a bungalow located in Limbdi town, Surendranagar district, has resulted in the tragic deaths of a young businessman and his wife. The victims, identified as Shabbir Lokhandwala, aged 32, and his wife Rashida, aged 29, succumbed to severe burns and suffocation caused by the rapidly spreading flames.

Preliminary Investigation Points to Air Conditioner Fault as Cause

According to Vishal Rabari, the Deputy Superintendent of Police for Surendranagar, initial investigations strongly indicate that a technical malfunction in the air conditioner was the primary trigger. "Preliminary investigation revealed that a technical fault in the air conditioner led to a blast and subsequent fire. The flames spread with alarming speed, completely engulfing the entire bungalow," Rabari stated. This finding highlights a critical safety concern regarding household appliances.

Couple Found Asleep, Suffered Extensive Burns Before Rescue Attempt

The couple was asleep in their bedroom when the fire broke out, leaving them with little chance to escape the inferno. "They suffered approximately 50-60% burns. Neighbors and other individuals managed to extract them from the burning structure and rushed them to the hospital. Unfortunately, they could not be saved. The main cause of death has been determined as suffocation due to smoke inhalation," Rabari explained to the media. This detail underscores the dual threat of fire incidents—direct burns and lethal smoke.

Additional Injuries and Conflicting Reports on Ignition Source

In addition to the fatalities, two other relatives sustained minor burns during the chaotic incident, though their conditions are reported as stable. Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the exact ignition source. While police cite the air conditioner, Kalimuddin, a relative of the deceased, offered a different perspective to the media. He claimed that a blast occurred in a mobile phone, with sparks subsequently falling on furniture, which then fueled the rapid spread of the fire. Authorities are continuing their investigation to reconcile these reports and determine the precise sequence of events.

Family Background and Community Response

The Lokhandwala family has been residing in Limbdi for many years, with Shabbir being recognized as a prominent local businessman. The couple did not have any children, adding a layer of profound loss to the community. Despite the tragedy, the combined efforts of the fire brigade and local residents were instrumental in containing the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjacent properties and potentially causing further devastation.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of regular maintenance and safety checks for electrical appliances in homes. The sudden and violent nature of the fire has left the Limbdi community in mourning, as they grapple with the untimely loss of a well-regarded couple.
