In a significant boost to India's security apparatus, nine highly-trained Belgian Malinois puppies were formally inducted into the ranks of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the West Bengal Police. The handover ceremony took place on Sunday in Bhavikeri village, located in the Ankola taluk of Karnataka's Karwar region.
From Village Kennel to National Service
The puppies are the result of years of dedicated work by Raghavendra Bhat, a resident of Bhavikeri and a passionate canine enthusiast. Bhat has specialized in breeding working-line Belgian Malinois, a breed globally celebrated for its exceptional intelligence, agility, stamina, and ease of training. These traits make the Malinois an ideal candidate for high-pressure security and defence roles.
Through a program of meticulous selective breeding, careful conditioning, and crucial early socialisation, Bhat has honed his expertise. His efforts have previously fortified India's security forces, with over 50 dogs from his home-based breeding program already serving in the Indian Army and various police units across the country.
A Formal Handover for Critical Duties
The brief but poignant ceremony in Bhavikeri saw the nine puppies allocated to the two forces. The CRPF personnel received four puppies, while the West Bengal Police contingent was entrusted with five. Officials from both forces were present to oversee the transfer, emphasizing the vital part these canines will play in modern internal security.
They outlined the multifaceted roles awaiting the dogs, which include detecting deadly improvised explosive devices (IEDs), conducting patrols in challenging and rugged terrains, and providing crucial support in counter-insurgency operations. The addition of these specially-bred dogs is seen as a force multiplier for the units.
Pride and Inspiration for the Community
Raghavendra Bhat expressed profound pride in his contribution to national service. He stated that seeing the dogs he reared go on to serve the nation brings immense satisfaction to him and his family. The event was witnessed by local villagers and security officials, who described it as deeply inspiring.
It underscored a powerful narrative of how dedicated ordinary citizens can actively strengthen and support India's broader defence and security ecosystem. The puppies represent a direct link between grassroots expertise and national safety.
The journey for these nine Belgian Malinois is just beginning. They will now be transported to dedicated training centres where they will undergo rigorous, specialised instruction. Their curriculum will encompass advanced explosive detection techniques, tactical patrol procedures, and obedience training tailored for high-stakes environments. Only after successfully completing this intensive program will they be deployed on active duty, ready to protect and serve.
