In a grim discovery, the skeletal remains of an 85-year-old woman were recovered from a forest area in South Goa over the weekend. The Collem police have initiated an investigation, registering the case as an unnatural death under the new Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
Forest Discovery Leads to Grisly Find
The incident came to light on Saturday when locals spotted what appeared to be human skeletal remains, including a skull, in a forest near Kumbharwada in the Dharbandora taluka. The location is within the jurisdiction of the Collem police station in Ponda.
Upon reaching the site, police officials found more than just bones. Some articles of clothing and a wooden stick were also discovered at the scene. These personal belongings later played a crucial role in identifying the deceased.
Son Identifies Mother Through Belongings
The discovery took a personal turn when 53-year-old Ulhas Vadkar, a resident of Kumbharwada, Sacorda, came forward. After being informed about the clothes found near the remains, Vadkar claimed they belonged to his missing mother.
He identified the deceased as his 85-year-old mother, Lilavati Babuso Vadkar. Based on this identification, the police proceeded with the formal process of retrieving the remains for further examination.
Post-Mortem and Case Registration
Following the recovery, the Collem police sent the skeletal remains for a detailed autopsy. The procedure was conducted at the South Goa District Hospital in Margao to determine the exact cause of death.
After the necessary medical formalities were completed, the remains were handed over to the grieving family members. The Vadkar family can now perform the final rites for Lilavati.
The police have officially registered the case. It has been booked as an unnatural death under the provisions of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. Further investigations are underway to uncover the circumstances that led to the elderly woman's death and the subsequent discovery of her remains in the forest.
