Himachal Police Intensify Crackdown on Drug Trafficking in Dehra District

In a decisive move to combat the escalating drug menace, the Dehra district police in Himachal Pradesh have invoked stringent preventive measures against habitual offenders. Over a span of three weeks, authorities have placed eight drug peddlers under preventive detention, leveraging the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1988. This legislative tool has proven instrumental in enabling law enforcement to detain individuals repeatedly involved in trafficking, thereby sending a clear warning to those engaged in the illicit drug trade.

Recent Detentions Under PIT-NDPS Act

According to Mayank Chaudhary, Superintendent of Police (SP) for Dehra, the police obtained detention orders on March 23 from the competent authority-cum-Secretary (Home) of the Himachal Pradesh Government, invoking Section 3(1) of the PIT-NDPS Act. Acting swiftly on these orders, two repeat offenders were apprehended on Tuesday evening and subsequently transferred to the district jail in Dharamsala. They will undergo preventive detention for an initial period of three months.

The detained individuals have been identified as Manu Sharma, also known as Malta, a resident of Jwalamukhi, and Vijay Kumar from Pragpur. Both face serious allegations of drug peddling and are accused of contributing to youth addiction in the region. Special police teams conducted coordinated raids at multiple locations to ensure their successful capture.

Police records reveal that Manu Sharma is implicated in two separate cases under the NDPS Act, registered at Dehra and Jwalamukhi police stations on January 29, 2025, and April 1, 2025, respectively. Vijay Kumar, on the other hand, has been booked in four distinct cases across various police stations within the Dehra police district, with charges related to the trafficking of heroin and hashish.

Earlier Actions and Broader Implications

This recent crackdown follows earlier enforcement actions by the Dehra police. On March 7, six other habitual offenders were detained under the same PIT-NDPS Act and lodged in the Dharamsala district jail, also for a three-month period. The accused in that operation were identified as Akashdeep from Khabli village, Raj Kumar from Gurnawar, Sharif Mohammad from Salihar, Pankaj Kumar from Sihorpai, Avinash Kumar from Sauntdayal, and Ashok Kumar from Kuhna village.

SP Chaudhary emphasized that all eight individuals were actively involved in drug smuggling operations, exacerbating the growing problem of drug addiction among the youth in the area. In addition to the detentions, the police have initiated financial investigations against the detainees to uncover and disrupt any illicit financial networks supporting their activities.

The use of the PIT-NDPS Act highlights a proactive approach by authorities to address the root causes of drug trafficking, focusing on preventive measures rather than reactive responses. This strategy aims to deter future offenses and protect vulnerable communities from the detrimental effects of substance abuse.
