Six Protesters Remanded in Police Custody Following India Gate Demonstration
Delhi Police has successfully obtained three days of police custody for six individuals who were arrested during a protest at India Gate. The accused were taken into custody by officers from the Kartavya Path police station on Sunday, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the demonstration.
Multiple Charges Filed Under New Legal Framework
The arrested individuals face serious allegations under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include criminal conspiracy, assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, voluntarily causing hurt, and assault on public servants to prevent them from performing their duties. Additional charges involve voluntarily obstructing public servants and disobedience of lawful orders issued by public authorities.
According to police sources, the investigation will focus on multiple aspects of the case. "We will be questioning them about the recent protest, their organisational affiliations, previous meetings and any other relevant activities," revealed official sources familiar with the investigation.
Investigation to Probe Alleged Naxalite Connections
Law enforcement authorities have indicated they will specifically examine the alleged support for Naxalite ideology displayed during the protest. "We will also investigate how long they were planning to use posters and slogans in support of Naxalite leader Madvi Hidma and the intentions behind such actions," a source close to the investigation stated.
The case has seen significant police action, with authorities confirming that 22 people have been arrested and one person detained in connection with the incident. The First Information Report (FIR) provides detailed accounts of the alleged offenses committed during the protest.
According to the FIR documentation, "When they tried to block the road, the police tried to remove them, but they sprayed pepper spray on the police personnel and tried to attack them. So, we have taken legal action against them." This alleged physical confrontation with law enforcement officers forms a crucial part of the case against the accused.
The three-day police custody will enable investigators to conduct thorough interrogations and gather additional evidence related to the protest activities and the organizational background of those involved.
