SUV Collision with Truck Leaves Five Dead
Five people were killed and one person was critically injured when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) crashed into a stationary truck in the Maihar area of Madhya Pradesh's Satna district late on Monday night, police said on Tuesday. The victims were returning from a birthday party when the accident occurred.
Details of the Incident
The accident took place around 11:30 pm on National Highway 30 near the Maihar police station limits. According to police officials, the SUV, which was carrying six people, rammed into a parked truck from behind. The impact was so severe that five occupants died on the spot, while one was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Police identified the deceased as Rajesh (32), Mukesh (28), Rakesh (35), Sunil (30), and Vikas (25). The injured person, identified as Deepak (27), is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Satna. All the victims were residents of the same locality in Maihar.
Cause of the Accident
Preliminary investigations suggest that the SUV was being driven at high speed and the driver lost control, leading to the collision. The truck was parked on the roadside without any warning lights, which may have contributed to the crash. Police have registered a case and are investigating further.
"The SUV was speeding and the driver failed to notice the parked truck. We are looking into all aspects, including whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol," said a police officer from Maihar police station.
Reactions and Aftermath
The news of the accident has sent shockwaves through the local community. Family members and friends of the victims gathered at the hospital and police station, mourning the loss. Local authorities have assured support to the bereaved families.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. "This is a tragic incident. My condolences are with the families. The state government will provide all possible help," he said in a statement.
Road Safety Concerns
The accident has once again highlighted the issue of road safety on national highways in Madhya Pradesh. According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Madhya Pradesh recorded over 9,000 road accidents in 2025, resulting in more than 4,000 deaths. Speeding and drunk driving are among the leading causes.
Local residents have demanded better lighting and warning signs on National Highway 30, especially near areas where vehicles are often parked. "The road is poorly lit and trucks frequently park on the roadside without indicators. It's a death trap," said a local activist.
