Three Police Constables Suspended in Nilgiris for Ganja Consumption During Duty Hours
In a shocking incident highlighting misconduct within the police force, three constables have been suspended in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu for consuming ganja while on duty. The action follows an investigation into a drug peddling network that has implicated several personnel.
Arrest of Constable Naseer Ahmed and Ganja Seizure
The case unfolded on the night of January 21, when officers from the Ooty town central police station were conducting a routine vehicle check. They intercepted a 26-year-old individual named Cruz from Ooty and discovered ganja in his possession. Further investigations revealed that Cruz had allegedly purchased the contraband from Constable Naseer Ahmed, 26, who was stationed at the same police station.
It was uncovered that Naseer Ahmed had sourced the ganja from Mohana Sundaram, a 34-year-old resident of Attapadi in Kerala. A few days later, both Naseer Ahmed and Sundaram were arrested in connection with the drug peddling operation. During the arrest, authorities seized approximately 17.5 kilograms of ganja from Sundaram's residence, indicating the scale of the illegal activity.
Suspension of Constables and Ongoing Inquiries
Subsequent inquiries exposed that some policemen had bought ganja from Naseer Ahmed and consumed it, including during their duty hours. Based on these findings, Nilgiris District Superintendent of Police N S Nisha ordered the immediate suspension of three constables:
- Constable Abishekaran from Erumad police station
- Constable Mayakkannan from Kotagiri police station
- Constable Santhakumar from Masinagudi police station
The suspensions were specifically for using ganja while on duty, a serious breach of conduct that undermines public trust in law enforcement. Police officials have stated that investigations are ongoing to determine if any other personnel were involved in purchasing ganja from Naseer Ahmed, suggesting that further disciplinary actions might follow as the probe continues.
This incident raises concerns about drug abuse within the police ranks and the effectiveness of internal oversight mechanisms. It underscores the need for stricter enforcement of anti-drug policies and regular monitoring to prevent such lapses in the future.
